Q&A: Do I pay taxes from the amount sold over the value of property?

Question by jerry: Do I pay taxes from the amount sold over the value of property?
We do not own a home, we rent. We do own property and sold it. How do we know what to base the tax on. Can we take the value of the property and subtract that from the sale of the property and pay taxes on the difference?
What if the property is an inheritance. Is the base the assessed value?

Answer by Molly
Your cost of ‘basis’ in the property is what you historically paid.
If you paid $ 10,000 for it, then that is your basis.

You would take your proceeds from the sale less the basis.

If there were any improvements done to the property, those could be factored into the basis as well.

Question by Ihaveaquestion: Will the IRS intercept your tax refund if you owe back property taxes?
If we owe back property taxes for 2007 will our refund from the IRS be taken this year to help pay for the back taxes? Any info would be appreciated!!! Thank you.

I would say no. Property taxes are owed to your county, not the Federal Government. My husband and I got behind on our property taxes back in 96, and we received letters from our county tax collector, mortgage company and a very nice (cough) lawyer for the mortgage company, but never heard from the IRS. We filed our Federal taxes like always and got our refund as usual. Your State refund, if you file state returns, may get offset, so you may want to check into that with them, but I wouldn’t worry about your Federal refund.

Every year, hundreds of New Yorkers congregate on Tax Day at the 24-hour post office at 34th and 8th Avenue, polishing off their 1040s, filling out their registered mail slips, and sealing their envelopes. The lines snake up and down the cavernous interior of the building and most of the people are more tired than anxious. (With the exception of the few still filling out their forms.)

I still need to work on paying attention to my fumble fingers and the ISO. Out in snow, with gloves on, I have twice now accidently bumped it up to 1600 and, since my glasses are transitioning to something akin to complete darkness, I don’t even see it until much too late.

[Note to self: These transition lenses have got to go at earliest convenience.]
